Dear colleagues,
The Center for Empirical Philosophy and Behavioral Insights (CEPBI) brings together researchers working at the intersection of philosophy and behavioral science. Over the next few months, we invite you to join us for four online Tandem Talks: 60-minute live sessions that bring a philosopher and a behavioral scientist into conversation on a shared topic, followed by an open Q&A with the audience.
OUR 2026 TANDEM TALKS:
(1) Capturing Consciousness: Consciousness is central to how we understand the human mind, yet it remains difficult to define, study, and measure. In this session, Steven Sweldens (RSM, Erasmus University) and Maja Spener (University of Birmingham) will explore what distinguishes conscious from unconscious mental processes, how consciousness emerges, and why it matters for perception and behavior. Bringing together perspectives from philosophy and behavioral science, the session will consider how we can capture consciousness as a phenomenon and an object of empirical inquiry.
- Time: Wednesday, May 13, 2026, 10–11 AM ET
- Join via Zoom:
(2) Social Constructions of Inequality: Why do inequalities emerge, and how do they shape perceptions, judgments, and behavior in consumption contexts? In this session, Sally Haslanger (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Keith Wilcox (Texas A&M University, Mays Business School) will explore how inequalities are socially constructed, interpreted, and experienced in everyday life.
- Time: Monday, June 22, 2026, 12–1 PM ET
- Join via Zoom:
(3) Debating Truth: How do people form beliefs about what is true? How do reputational, social, or psychological factors shape our commitment to truth—or our willingness to let it go? In this session, Gita Johar (Columbia University) and Paul Thagard (University of Waterloo) will explore how truth is defined, defended, and sometimes manipulated.
- Time: Thursday, September 10, 2026, 1–2 PM ET
- Join via Zoom:
(4) History of Philosophy… With Some Gaps: While our Tandem Talk format typically brings a philosopher and a behavioral scientist into dialogue, our final 2026 Tandem Talk will be a special session featuring a single speaker who offers a big-picture perspective. In this talk, Peter Adamson (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) will guide us through the major milestones of the history of philosophy – offering a concise and engaging overview of key thinkers and traditions across time. As the title suggests, the journey will be selective, highlighting central developments in a compact and accessible way.
