AI in the Consumer Marketplace
Issue Editors: Bernd Schmitt, Ana Valenzuela, Reto Hofstetter, and Luca Cian
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the consumer marketplace and the ways in which we study it. This special issue will advance consumer research on AI in the consumer marketplace—focusing on Generative AI (GenAI) and beyond. GenAI is shaping experiences through text, image, and video generation, conversational assistance, and co-creative ideation. Yet consumer life with AI extends further: embodied AI (robots and autonomous agents), conversational AI (voice and chat interfaces), predictive and personalized AI (recommenders and adaptive offers), agentic AI (systems making decisions without constant human supervision), affective AI (emotion recognition and mood sensing), and spatial AI (AR/VR and ambient systems) increasingly mediate how consumers interact with products, services, and one another. The issue, therefore, aims to build cumulative theoretical and methodological knowledge about how AI technologies—generative and otherwise—reshape consumer perception, judgment, experience, and trust. We invite research that identifies new mechanisms, constructs, and frameworks; develops empirical evidence across contexts; and advances methods for integrating AI into consumer research itself. Together, these contributions will establish the conceptual and methodological foundation for understanding the next generation of consumer–AI interactions.
