In 2012, Washington State privatized the sale of liquor, meaning that companies like Costco, Walmart, and others could start selling alcohol to consumers. Previously, the states Liquor Control Board had a monopoly on the booze business, which included running all of the states retail stores that sold wine and spirits. This paper shows that private retailers gradually learned how to set prices, optimally. During the interview, youll learn how the paper evolved as the authors generated new analysis and refined their thinking.
