Individual and societal well-being in clothing consumption
Submission deadline: Saturday, 30 November 2024
The clothing industry, particularly its fast fashion sector, annually produces 92 million tonnes of waste and contributes to 20% of global water waste (Bailey et al., 2022; Niinimäki et al., 2020). This environmental toll, coupled with the industry’s dismal ethical track record, including extremely low pay and deplorable working conditions for garment workers in developing countries (Islam et al., 2017, 2021), underscores the societal cost of the pursuit of cheap and frequent consumption. This cost is further magnified in terms of individual ill-being, as consumers are constantly exposed to fashion marketing messages that tie fashion to social status and success, creating social pressure to conform to specific looks and leading to feelings of inadequacy, stress and anxiety (Coy-Dibley, 2016; Schneider, 2022).
