We are pleased to confirm that the International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management has opened a Special Issue on the topic of the Technology, People and Sustainability: Shaping a Better Retail Future.
This Special Issue follows upon the 8th Colloquium on European Research in Retailing which was held in Portsmouth in July.
Retail sectors around the globe are facing many seismic changes, and the most prominent ones appear to be related to technology, people and sustainability. Retail relies on digital interface and systems to conduct its front- and back-stage activities, including serving customers, as exemplified by the use of self-service checkouts in-store and chatbots online. Scholars argue that there is a subtle reversion to humanised service and experience to foster retail shoppers loyalty. These are depicted by the introduction of personal styling services by department stores (e.g. John Lewis) and the assembly and installation services by home furniture retailers (e.g., Ikea). Finally, we cannot ignore sustainability issues. How can retail combine those considerations warrants further consideration, theoretically and practically, to better illuminate what the retail future may look or feel like.
When addressing the proposed question, we cannot ignore the changes surrounding or associated with sustainability (Noble et al., 2022). This focus is especially pertinent to respond to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (), 12 (n), and .
We welcome submissions, but not exclusively on the following themes and related tracks:
