The Marketing Science Institute (MSI) is accepting applications and nominations for the 2023 MSI Young Scholars Program.

We are planning to convene a 2023 class of Young Scholars January 2nd to 5th in Salt Lake City, UT. Over four days, the class will participate in the following activities:

  • Individual research presentations that offer opportunities for future study that could benefit from academic-practitioner collaboration;
  • Integrative exercises building upon participant presentations, focusing on how MSI can better serve the academic field, and how the field can help MSI and its members;
  • Excursions, networking, and opportunities for cohort building.

Eligible faculty must apply in order to be considered for the MSI Young Scholars program. Submissions will be accepted through July 31th, 2023. MSI and the Young Scholars Committee will then select approximately 30 individuals representing diverse research perspectives focused on MSI-relevant problems. Young Scholars are committing to attending the full conference in person if chosen and to supporting MSI activities in the following two years.

ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION PROCESS

Eligible academics for the MSI Young Scholars program will be approximately 3-6 years out from receipt of their Ph.D., who received their Ph.D.s between 2016 and 2019. They should have a keen understanding of the importance of academic-practitioner partnerships and be prepared to share ideas for practical application.

MSI encourages you to identify eligible scholars and suggest that they apply for submission to the 2023 Young Scholars Class. Please note that submissions are self-nomination and application forms must be completed by the eligible scholar.

If you are a senior faculty interested in nominating a young scholar, please forward this communication to the young scholar and encourage them to apply, AND send an email to executivedirector@msi.org to nominate the person and provide their name and email.

Along with a curriculum vitae (CV), and a Web of Science summary file (click for instructions), the application must include a 2-page summary of the translational implications of the applicant’s past and future research for MSI’s research priorities, business practice, and industry trends, including a paragraph summary of the key findings from the scholar’s two most important papers from the past five years.

Applications are due on July 31th 2023 and can be .

SELECTION PROCESS

The MSI Young Scholars will be selected by the Young Scholars Committee, and participation will be limited to approximately 30 individuals from the pool of applicants.

Selection is highly competitive. For the 2021 Young Scholars class, the selection committee considered over 110 applicants, most of whom were highly impressive. The committee will consider:

  • A paragraph summary of the substantive contributions of the candidate’s two most important papers of past 5 years.
  • Field service and leadership
  • Citations and other evidence of impact on the field of marketing (best article awards, etc)
  • Research productivity and quality in top business journals and relevant publications in adjacent disciplines
  • Relevance of research to the MSI member community and past involvement with MSI

In selecting the 2023 class of MSI Young Scholars, the committee will seek a balance across the various sub-fields in marketing, and applications are open to other disciplines where appropriate (e.g., economics, statistics, psychology, and computer science) if the candidate is working on emerging business, technology, and public policy issues of interest to member companies.

Selections will be made by October, 2023.  At that time, all applicants will receive notification from MSI and the Young Scholars Committee regarding their application for the Young Scholars Class of 2023. Selected scholars will be asked to commit to attending the conference as a firm condition for receiving this prestigious honor and should anticipate active engagement with MSI following the conference.  The conference registration fee will be $800-1000 (specifics TBD).
