Motivation: Marketing scholars have a leading role to play in helping address challenges facing society and business. There have been concerns and problems facing consumer well-being, brands, and social cohesion that are fueled in part by social media use. This call for chapters is to address these dark side topics and to propose solutions.
Details: Each should have rigor and relevance, and should cover a negative consequence of social media use on either consumers, society, or brands/businesses. APA style. 30-40 pages, and 2-3 figures. Each should be based on data and also include a psychology theory as well as a proposed solution to the problem. For examples of chapters, please refer to a previous book The Dark Side of Social Media: A Consumer Psychology Perspective (Scheinbaum 2018). Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
Consumer/Society Side
- mental health effects/suicides related to social media use or cyber bullying
- addiction (this includes shopping addiction that could be fueled by social media use/influencers)
- FOMO
- the dark web online consumer behavior
- online consumer behavior on TikTok with negative consequences or intentions
- fraud
- trolls
- politics/elections
- social media impact on major court cases
- consumer well being
Brand/Business Side
- firestorms
- boycotts
- negative ewom
- influencer scandals negatively transferring to a brand
- stock price impacts
- cancel culture and brands/companies
In addition- open to ideas on the dark side of social media that uses psychology theories.
