Dakota State University is pleased to host our inaugural Data Analytics Competition, sponsored by CAPITAL Services! As you and your students are planning your spring semester, we would like to encourage you to consider participating in the competition.

This free event is aimed at allowing collegiate teams to evaluate big data sets and make data forecasts for real-world business needs, giving students plenty of opportunities to grow their critical thinking, collaboration and presentation skills — plus there is a possibility of winning a prize!

The number of teams in the competition will be limited to 50 with a max of 10 teams allowed from an individual school. The teams can be a mixture of graduate and undergraduate students.

The first round of the competition will take place over approximately 30 days. Registered teams will receive the problem statement and data sets at the beginning of the competition and submit their final analysis and conclusions for selection of five finalists.

The top 5 scoring teams will advance to the second round of the competition. The finalists will be required to make a final presentation on the competition day held on the DSU campus in Madison, SD on March 22nd during DSU’s annual Research Symposium. Each team will have 15-20 minutes to present their results to the audience. After all teams have presented the judges will tally final scores and announce the winners. Support of $500 will be provided to each finalist team to cover food, travel, and other expenses related to the competition, to be spent at advisor’s discretion.

Interested candidates and teams should have at least an introductory course in statistics completed prior to the start of the competition and should also be prepared to summarize correlations and conclusions from large data sets.
