Entrepreneurial Innovation in the International Business of Tourism, Routledge
The evaluation and application of key tourism theoretical concepts have become increasingly important in academic research and management practice. The growth has been driven in large part by the prodigious, prestigious research and publication output of researchers in a handful of business schools, over a couple of decades. From early work on key tourism sectors, published in world-leading journals such as the Journal of Tourism Management, as far back as the previous millennium, these scholarly works have led to the development of scales for changing the industry structure, progressing to a research agenda encompassing all aspects of tourism business theory, and entrepreneurship, trends, issues and challenges, in a wide spectrum of traditional and new formats.
Over the ensuing decades, this field has been both defined and broadened. Previously published research demonstrated that there is considerable divergence of opinion among practitioners concerning the fundamental components of tourism theory. Over the decades, research has made great strides in unifying the concepts. Further research has progressed beyond the role of identifying trends in the global tourism industry, creating awareness of the major developments, opportunities and challenges, through global tourism business literature: understanding the influence of local and national governments and international agencies; the effects of supply and demand; other research links; the impacts of tourism in particular regions. The main antecedents of favourable entrepreneurial innovation in the tourism sector are political, technological, environmental, and social. Compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical, and social conditions is a requirement. More recent studies extend understanding of the issues and challenges associated with the business of tourism.
