Abstract

The United Nations’ vision for official (public) statistics is that it should ‘provide an indispensable element in the information system of a democratic society, serving the government, the economy and the public with data about the economic, demographic, social and environmental situation’. The RSS’s National Statistics Advisory Group (NSAG) is seeking to promote discussion of ‘public statistics’ and, at this meeting, we are focussing upon the availability and use of public statistics for business and industry.

The issues involved will be introduced by our first speaker, Giuliana Battisti of the University of Warwick and the Royal Statistical Society’s National Statistics Advisory Group. Our second speaker, David Smallbone of KPMG, will discuss using public data in business and industry. Our third speaker Frances Pottier (Head of Business Statistics, Business Energy and Industrial Strategy department) will talk about being a user and a producer of data for decision making in a government department.

We will conclude with an open discussion, to hear the views and experiences of as many people as possible. Everyone is warmly invited to attend and listen and/or contribute.
