The 2020 Louis W. Stern Award Winner

The 2020 Stern Award Committee, chaired by Aric Rindfleisch (University of Illinois) and including Jakki Mohr (University of Montana) and Shankar Ganesan (University of Notre Dame), is pleased to announce that Jill Avery (Harvard University), Thomas J. Steenburgh (University of Virginia), John Deighton (Harvard University), and Mary Caravella (University of Connecticut) are the winners of the 2020 Louis W. Stern Award. Their winning article Adding Bricks to Clicks: Predicting the Patterns of Cross-Channel Elasticities Over Time, was published in the Journal of Marketing in 2012.

The judging criteria were the quality of the data, the originality of the theorizing, and the impact (citations) to date.

The committee unanimously agreed that the article is an outstanding example of novel and well executed research that has made a significant contribution to the field of inter-organizational relationship research. Specifically, the committee commented that:

This article builds on research on multi-channel retailing in the marketing domain, offering a unique perspective on this issue by examining the impact on sales of adding a new physical store to a firm’s direct mail and online retailing channels. It also offers a novel conceptualization to explain the sales impact based on channel substitution and complementarity effects in both the short term and long term, for both first-time buyers as well as repeat customers. This conceptualization is tested using data obtained from a real-world retailer via a nicely executed quasi-experiment based on pairing stores via a matching algorithm. Thus, this study offers both a conceptual as well as an empirical contribution to the topic of multi-channel marketing and serves as an important foundation for future research and practice in this domain. As an indicator of its impact of marketing scholarship, this article has accumulated nearly 400 citations (Google Scholar).

The Interorganizational SIG‘s Louis W. Stern Award was established by Louis W. and Rhona L. Stern in 1999 through the 蹤獲扦夥厙 Foundation. The award recognizes an outstanding article published in a widely recognized and highly respected refereed journal that has made a significant contribution to the literature on marketing and channels of distribution between three and eight calendar years after publication.

The IOSIG thanks all who took the time to nominate and vote for articles for the 2020 Louis W. Stern Award and especially appreciates all the work the award committee put into selecting the winning article. The Stern Award will be conferred at the Summer Educators conference in August during the Awards Luncheon. Please join us in offering Jill, Thomas, John, and Mary sincere congratulations for their outstanding contribution to our field!
