Dear colleagues,
Since the #MeToo movement, it has become clear that sexual harassment, bullying, intimidation, and discrimination on various grounds (including mental and physical health) are remarkably widespread across the natural and social sciences. To begin to sketch the contours of this problem in our discipline, I am seeking the accounts of marketing academics (or consumer researchers) who have been subject to any of the above pressures and problematic behaviours. Ideally, participants will come from all corners of the globe and reflect all levels of seniority and career span.
Put simply, what I want to explore are questions such as the following (these are not rigid guidelines): how have harassment and discrimination affected you, your family, career, and health? Did you file a formal grievance about the practices (verbal and behavioural)? Were the issues resolved to your satisfaction? Did you have to move institutions? Did you consider leaving academia? Do the consequences of these actions continue to shape your lifeworld?
Any responses to this request will be used to inform a narrative based account of harassment and discrimination in marketing academia. All information will be anonymised, with only country and gender listed to ensure all identities are protected. Furthermore, those who wish to participate in this project by providing their narratives might want to consider using personal – not university – email accounts and they should use pseudonyms when specific people are referenced in the narrative material. Finally, all email correspondence and copies of documentation will be destroyed as soon as the final paper is written. No identifying content will be shared with any other individuals.
