Introduction
Marketing Science Pioneer (1943?2018)
An Appreciation: Margaret Henderson Blair, Marketing Science Pioneer (1943–2018)
Dr. Margaret (Meg) Henderson Blair was a pioneer and innovator who made many contributions to marketing measurement and accountability. She left us on March 8, 2018.
Meg attended the Rayen School, Sarah Lawrence College and the New School for Social Research in New York. She was later awarded an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the University of Southern Indiana, where she helped establish the Blair Chair for Business Science.
She was a young, female business leader at a time when business leaders with either characteristic were uncommon. As the president of ARS Group, she advanced measurement science, her findings regularly published in industry journals. In a field where patents are rarely granted, Meg was awarded two. She received the Distinguished Practitioner Award from the Academy of Marketing Science in 2005 and the Advertising Research Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. She served as a mentor to many.
In 2007, the Marketing Accountability Standards Board was created to improve marketing by setting measurement and performance standards. As founding President and CEO, Meg led MASB through its first decade. Relinquishing her leadership role a year ago, she continued to serve as Foundation Chair. She was named MASB Trailblazer in 2017 for embodying the spirit of marketing accountability.
Her work over several decades has had a permanent, positive impact on marketing.
