“Psychology in Sport Marketing and Sponsorship”

The Sport & Sponsorship-Linked Marketing Special Interest Group (SportSIG) of the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø (ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø) is soliciting research abstracts for inclusion in a special session proposal for presentation at the 2018 ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Winter Conference in New Orleans, LA on February 23-25, 2018.

Abstracts should be limited to 500 words in length and may be on any topic related to research or education in sponsorship or sport marketing, however abstracts related to the session theme of “Psychology in Sport Marketing and Sponsorship” are especially encouraged.

The deadline for abstracts to be considered for the special session proposal is August 14, 2017.

The best composition of submitted abstracts will be compiled into the special session proposal and authors will be notified within 10 days of submission of their inclusion in the proposal. To submit your abstract or for questions contact special session chair Lane Wakefield (Wakefield_LT@mercer.edu).

This year’s conference theme is, “Integrating Paradigms in a World Where Marketing is Everywhere”. Given the crossover between psychology and sport marketing, this special session seeks papers that apply theories, paradigms, and frameworks from the field of psychology into sport marketing contexts. Several psychological paradigms with wide-reaching implications, such as BIRGing (Cialdini et al., 1976), Blasting (Cialdini & Richardson, 1980), CORFing (Snyder, Higgins, & Stucky, 1983), and COFFing (Wann, Hamlet, Wilson, & Hodges, 1995), were either first discovered or investigated via the sport context, and this session attempts to continue in that tradition.

Potential topics for this session may include (but are not limited to):

  • Information processing of pricing, promotions or sponsor messages
  • Consumer motivations to attend sport and entertainment events
  • Examinations of factors impacting positive return on investment in sponsorship
  • Structural equation models that utilize latent variables to explain key performance indicators for sponsors or sports organizations
  • Use of devices (such as eye tracking software or fMRI) that are superior to standard self-reported survey measures
  • Examinations of social media use by consumers and/or sponsors
  • Understanding how new consumer technology (e.g. virtual reality, autonomous vehicles) is perceived by sports marketers, sponsors and/or consumers

Key Dates:

  • Deadline for submission of abstracts: August 14, 2017
  • Notification of inclusion in special session proposal: August 23, 2017

Requirements for submission: Each submission should contain a 500-word abstract that includes the title of the paper and the names/affiliations of each author. In addition, you must include an alphabetical list of references. The submission should be single spaced, and use 12-point Times New Roman font.

NOTE: At least one author from each abstract selected for inclusion in the special session will need to register and attend the 2018 Winter ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Conference.

Questions should be directed to:

Special Session Chair: Lane Wakefield, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Sports Marketing and Analytics, Stetson School of Business and Economics, Mercer University, Wakefield_LT@mercer.edu, @LTWakefield
