Peter FitzRoy, Emeritus Professor at Monash University, passed away 16 Nov 2016
The Department of Marketing at Monash University is deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Trevor FitzRoy, Emeritus Professor, on 16 November 2016 at the age of 80.
His career as a Professor of Marketing at Monash University spanned 39 years. He obtained his PhD from Purdue and from 1970 to 1976 was at the Manchester Business School. Peter joined Monash in 1976 and was the first appointed Professor in Marketing at Monash. He formally retired in 2001 but continued to teach in the MBA program.
The published at the Monash University website describes Peter’s long and important contribution to Monash University.
Peter made significant contributions to the marketing and management disciplines in Australia/New Zealand and internationally as a scholar, teacher and mentor. He was one of the academic founders of marketing in Australia. Regarding the academic marketing community, particular points worth noting are:
- Peter, with Robin Shaw and Peter Chandler, who were also at Monash, in 1980 published the first Australian adaptations of Kotler’s textbook: Kotler, FitzRoy and Shaw, Australian Marketing Management and in 1983: Kotler, Shaw, Fitzroy and Chandler, Marketing in Australia.
- Peter organised the first academic marketing meetings in Australia, at the Monash Clayton campus in the late 70’s; these were precursors to the annual conferences of the Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy (ANZMAC).
- As Head of Department, by appointing Frank Alpert at Monash, Peter supported the establishing of a new academic journal that would later develop into the Australasian Marketing Journal, the journal associated with ANZMAC; Frank was the first editor.
- Most of all, Peter FitzRoy loved teaching and working with students and was known to his students and colleagues as a stimulating and supportive person with a strong intellect and an infectious sense of humour.
