Jack Lindgren’s Obituary by/from his Marketing Area Colleagues

With much sadness, the Marketing Area of the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia announces the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Jack Lindgren, on Sunday, October 23rd, 2016. Jack retired in 2013, after teaching in the McIntire School since 1978. He was the driving force behind the school’s renowned Advertising and Promotions programs, in which his classes repeatedly took top awards in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competitions. Jack held the Consumer Bankers Association Professorship and also directed the McIntire Business Institute (MBI) Program. He was also a faculty member in numerous banking programs, including the Graduate School of Retail Bank Management, the Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management, and the National Banking School. He also served as co-chair of the 2002 ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Summer Educators’ Conference, as Vice President of the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø, and as a member of the National ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Board of Directors. Additionally, Jack consulted with a variety of organizations, including the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Chicago. In the scholarly realm, he published numerous articles in such journals as Journal for the Academy of Marketing Science and Journal of Services Marketing, as well as numerous proceedings papers for national and regional professional associations. Moreover, he co-authored 10 books and monographs in the field of marketing and served on the editorial boards of several marketing publications.

We will especially remember Jack for his infectious smile and hearty laugh, his passion for golf, his kind-heartedness for and dedication to his thousands of students, and his tireless efforts for the advancement of our school and university. Jack played a pivotal role beginning in the late 1990s, with his close friend and colleague Bill Kehoe, in transforming the McIntire marketing area into the expanded and successful group it is today, for which he was immensely proud.
