Innovative Excellence in Marketing Ed
Introduction
Madhu Viswanathan has won the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Teaching and Learning SIG's 2015 Pearson Prentice Hall Solomon-Marshall-Stuart Award
The ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Teaching and Learning SIG is pleased to award Pearson Prentice Hall’s 2015 Solomon-Marshall-Stuart Award for Innovative Excellence in Marketing Education to Dr. Madhu Viswanathan. Madhu is the Diane and Steven N. Miller Professor of Business at University of Illinois at Urbana-Chapaign.
Dr. Viswanathan’s innovative teaching offers students, most of whom come from privileged and affluent backgrounds, two significant opportunities. First, the ability to understand consumers in markets other than their own and those addressed by most marketing courses, and to be exposed to different opportunities than they might have in traditional courses. Second, to empathize with those less privileged than themselves in a very realistic way, and to learn the humility that is so important in graduates. Using a combination of methods (experiential learning activities, simulations, lectures, cases, and immersion in subsistence markets) students learn a side of marketing and consumer behavior that is seldom taught in such detail. Dr. Viswanathan has developed a curriculum of courses in this area for undergraduates and graduate (including Exec MBA) students.
You are invited to attend our Summer ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø special session on Saturday afternoon, August 15, to hear Dr. Viswanathan’s presentation on his innovative work, and afterward at the award reception immediately following.
All the best from your Teaching and Learning SIG Officers,
Liz Wilson, Chair
