An AACSB Scholarly Academic
Introduction
Jeff Blodgett seeks input and dialog on the AACSB "Scholarly Academic" classification and related topics
I would like to ask others to share their school’s policies regarding AACSB 2013 Standard 15, “Faculty Qualifications and Engagement” (more commonly known as AQ/PQ). AACSB now requires schools to classify faculty as either "Scholarly Academics," "Practice Academics," "Scholarly Practitioners" or "Instructional Practitioners". I am particularly interested in other business school’s policies regarding “Scholarly Academic” (SA) qualifications.
The AACSB website states that “Normally, faculty members may undertake a variety of academic engagement activities consistent with the school’s mission-linked research of business and management to support maintenance of SA status. A non-exhaustive list of academic engagement activities may include the following:”
- Scholarly activities leading to the production of scholarship outcomes as documented in Standard 2
- Relevant, active editorships with academic journals or other business publications
- Service on editorial boards or committees
- Validation of SA status through leadership positions, participation in recognized academic societies and associations, research awards, academic fellow status, invited presentations, etc.”
Accordingly, which of these academic activities do schools include in their SA qualifications, and how many are required? Also, regarding journal publications, is the list of acceptable journals broadly defined, or is it more limited? In other words, does the list of journals that are acceptable for SA status differ from that for T&P?
I hope to hear from colleagues from a variety of business schools. Thanks!
