Passing of Professor Emeritus Claude Martin
Dear Colleagues,
It is with sadness that I share the news that Ross Professor Emeritus Claude Martin, whose research helped shape policy and ethics in advertising research, died March 15 at the age of 82 while on vacation in Florida. Martin was the Isadore and Leon Winkelman Professor Emeritus of Retail Marketing and lived in Ann Arbor.
Claude joined the Ross faculty in 1965 and was a prolific researcher and highly regarded teacher. He authored more than 70 articles in national and international journals, wrote five books and monographs, and was a consultant to some of the world’s largest companies. Martin taught in Ross degree programs and Executive Education. He was also chair of marketing at Ross from 1986-1989.
Some of his seminal research includes the effect of telecommunications technology on consumer behavior, public policy and ethical issues in advertising research, and studies on attitudes and usage of U.S. currency. His research correctly predicted the poor reception of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. He also served on the board of directors of Perry Drug Stores Inc. and Comerica Bank-Ann Arbor, and was a member of the National Advertising Review Board, and the Marketing Science Institute. Martin retired from Ross in 2002.
He is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Scott) Solsburg, William (Cathy) Martin, Patrick (Dorsey) Martin, and Cecelia Martin; grandchildren Andrew Peltcs, Caroline Peltcs, Annemarie Martin, and Peter Martin; step-grandchildren Jeffrey (Lindsay) Schleis, and Kelly Schleis; and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Stella Schleis. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Gleason, and many nieces and nephews. Martin was predeceased by his wife, Marie, and a son, David.
Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. March 23 at Nie Family Funeral Home in Ann Arbor. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. March 24 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, with interment to follow immediately at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or to St. Isabel Parish in Sanibel Island, Florida.
