Workshop Program

Purpose: The objective of the "3rd ESCP Europe Marketing Faculty Publication Workshop", is to support marketing faculty members at the beginning of their academic career in their effort to publish their research in the most prestigious outlets within the marketing discipline. Over a period of one week the editors of five leading marketing journals (International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science) will work together with a small group of early career marketing faculty members (max. 25) in an interactive way to provide hands-on advice on the research and publication process. Participation is limited to small number of scholars to ensure a high level of interactivity between the participants and editors and among participants. Topics of discussion include how to pick your research topic and team; how to approach and report statistical findings; how to generate ideas for research and publication; how to define contributions and respond to reviewer comments; and how to craft and publish consumer behavior research.

Target group: Full-time, tenure-track marketing faculty members (Assistant Professor level) who have either recently been hired by an academic institution or are working in such an institution for less than three years. Preference will be given to faculty members who have obtained their PhD in Europe and/ or are working in a business school or university in Europe. Participants are expected to participate during the full duration of the workshop.

Application procedure: Applications should be sent by e-Mail to the workshop organizer Michael Haenlein (haenlein@escpeurope.eu) by August 31st 2014 at the latest. Applications should include a short (one-page) CV, a brief statement on the reasons for wanting to attend the seminar and a copy of a recent research paper (either published or work-in-progress) authored or co-authored by the applicant. Selection will be based on academic achievement and participants will be notified by September 30th 2014.

Location: The workshop will take place at the Paris campus of ESCP Europe (79 Avenue de la République, 75011 Paris, France). Established in 1819, ESCP Europe is the World’s First Business School and has educated generations of leaders and upfront thinkers. With five urban campuses in Europe (Paris, London, Berlin, Madrid, Torino) and 100 international partner universities, ESCP Europe represents 40,000 alumni working in key positions in over 100 countries.

Participant Feedback

"This workshop was amazingly helpful. I started to understand the publication and review process at different journals much better and I am confident that I will use a lot of the information provided in future. I also liked that we were a diverse group of people with different backgrounds which made the experience very unique." (Germany) Thanks for organizing this workshop! I found all the talks to be very insightful and I am persuaded it will help me a lot in the publication process. I have liked that the group of participants was fairly small, as it allowed for many interactions and personalized advice. I now have a clearer understanding of the positioning of each journal, which for sure will help me framing my papers much better." (Canada)

"I arrived back home last night feeling blessed to have been part of such a wonderful experience. I really cannot thank you enough for such an excellent workshop. If one thinks of gaining knowledge as partly a process of continuous reading for (and learning from) scholars in the field, it can never really match the interactions, the intellectual stimulation, and the discussions that occur by meeting these scholars." (Egypt)

"The workshop was absolutely phenomenal. Personally, it was enlightening to hear editors talk about the publication process from their perspective and to get a better feel for how I can manage the submission/review process. I think the workshop probably saved a minimum of three years of trial and error for me personally. Additionally, I found it incredibly valuable to hear from editors across all five journals. It was particularly insightful to see how much is common to publishing in marketing in general as well as the slight variations in preferences for each journal." (USA)

This workshop represents a unique opportunity to have, at the same time, the editors of the leading journals in marketing. We were able to informally exchange with those experienced researchers about our discipline in many aspects of our work: teaching, research and institutional services. We were able to have ad-hoc and personalized advices in order to improve our research strategy and implementation. This gave us an overview of the best practices to publish and review in marketing journals" (Spain)
