Sustainability has become a hotly contested discourse within academia. Marketing and marketers are challenged by sustainability as society grapples with increasing activism, the need for sustainable innovation and the quest for sustainable brands. This special issue of the Journal of Marketing Management invites marketing practitioners and academics to reflect upon sustainability and its consequences by asking various stakeholders to voice their cases with respect to ‘what does the sustainability discourse do to and for marketing management?’ While response to macromarketing and other social science scholarship is encouraged, the primary focus of this special issue is on marketing management, branding and extending prior sustainability literature in an enriching way.

The Journal of Marketing Management has consistently commented on Sustainability with two special issues in the past focused on this theme in 1998 and 2012. Given the perceived import of marketing in bringing about change we again place this call for papers in front of the academy to advance the 30 or so journal contributions (see full CFP) to this journal’s deliberations on the possibility of sustainability.
