Innovation in luxury value chain

New paradigms and best practices that could help managing the complexity of the luxury value chain

Guest Editors:

Context/ Theme

The luxury industry encompasses companies producing and selling such goods as cars, yachts, wines and spirits, clothing, leather goods, shoes, accessories, watches, jewellery, cosmetics and perfumes, but also services including luxury hospitality and SPAs. Globally, such industry is estimated to reach €1 trillion in a matter of years.

The continuous evolution of the market (growth in the number of HNWI, role of social media, consumers becoming more aware and demanding, new players entering the market, demand shifting from traditional geographical markets to emerging ones…) suggests that the players competing in the luxury market – either established brands or newcomers – need to identify and apply their own winning strategies.

With reference to this context, it is fundamental to foster the development of specific models and frameworks that (1) help understanding the complexity of the luxury business, (2) suggest approaches that support the creation and preservation of real value for the consumers, taking into account the complexity of a business field where no mistakes are allowed.

Aim

The aim of this special issue is to provide academics and practitioners interested in the luxury business with state-of-the-art proposals and results in terms of “how to manage luxury brands/products” from several points of view, including (yet not limited to) the following:

  • understanding luxury brands perception;
  • understanding the luxury value chain;
  • aligning the organization towards a luxury positioning;
  • analysing counterfeiting issues and protect the brand;
  • adapting management approaches from non-luxury sectors;

Despite several publications dealt with the business of luxury, there is still lack of evidences and results that could generate concrete suggestions and support for managerial choices. This special issues wishes to follow the suggestion of luxury leaders stating that high standards can and must be maintained throughout the supply chain, from production to distribution in retail stores.
