Your Department on Social Media

Introduction

Dan Laufer would like to hear from fellow academics - what is your department's use of social media and experience with it?

Our school is considering creating a presence on social media (Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter) in order to strengthen our ties to key stakeholders such as alumni, students, business community, etc. We envision that a presence on social media could enhance two way communications. For example, stakeholders will learn more about what is happening at the school, and we will learn more about what our stakeholders are doing (for example, alumni).

It would be very useful for us to know whether other Marketing departments have an official presence on social media, and if yes, their experience with it. This will greatly assist us in our decision whether to create a social media presence. In particular, answers to the following questions will be very useful:

  1. Did the marketing department need approval from the business school and university to create a social media presence? Does your business school/university have an initiative/policy regarding this issue? Can different departments within your business school create an official presence on social media?
  2. Is the presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin) considered formal or informal? Who manages the Department’s social media strategy? How time consuming is it?
  3. What types of social media do you have a presence on (Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, Other)?
  4. How do you use Social Media?
  5. What have been the benefits of creating a social media presence?
  6. What types of issues have you faced as a result of creating a social media presence?

Thank you for considering my request, and I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Best regards,
