MOOC Ideas
Introduction
Jamie Murphy tosses out a couple of ideas on MOOCs and seeks feedback
The New York Times declared 2012 as the ‘Year of the MOOC’ and these Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) continue to gain traction.Two short MOOC ideas follow.
Instead of building your own MOOC:
1. Incorporate an existing MOOC into your class. Students earn a certificate and you have class time for discussing the MOOC material in lieu of lecturing. This Google MOOC seems a great foundation for getting online, finding information, navigating the web, and connecting and sharing online.
2. Develop/join a consortia of universities, textbook publishers and organizations — e.g. ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø, AMS, DMA, SMA and MEA — that will collaborate on the same MOOC(s). Two forthcoming conferences with MOOC workshops that include consortia ideas are:
* ENTER 2014, 21-24 January in Dublin
* Winter ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø, 21-23 February in Orlando
In closing, anyone that says they know and understand MOOCs is probably wrong. MOOCs are too new and the technology keeps evolving. I make no claims to be a MOOC expert, rather a fumbling/bumbling MOOC pioneer.
A great weekend to all,
Cheers, Jamie
