Advances in National brands & Private Labels in retailing – 2014 International Symposium – Call for Papers
Conference Dates and Venue: June 25th-27th, 2014, Barcelona, Spain.
Conference Chairs: Juan Carlos Gázquez-Abad (University of Almería, Spain) and Francisco J. Martínez-López (University of Granada, Spain; Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain)
This is the first international symposium on Advances in National brands & Private Labels in retailing, to be held in Barcelona (Spain) on June 25th-27th, 2014. This conference is sponsored by several institutions, with outstanding contribution of the most important retailing-related foundation in Spain (Foundation Ramón Areces, sponsored by El Corte Inglés Company). Also, conference papers will be published with the prestigious publisher Springer, so will be online accessible through the powerful Springer’s online platform; this is very interesting for the authors’ papers diffusion. Plus, we expect to edit a special issue (co-guest edited with Prof. James Brown, West Virginia University, USA) in an international marketing/business journal, with extended and revised versions of a selection of the best papers; we are currently working on it and will eventually update the conference’s website with news about it when officially agreed with such a journal.
The concrete theme for this first edition is on a passionate and timely research theme: “National brands vs. Private label strategies: a ‘new landscape’ in times of crisis?” The targeted topics are, but not limited to, the following:
- Mix of national brands and PLs in retailers’ assortments.
- Assortment decisions in times of economic crisis and eventual recovery.
- Consequences of delisting brands on store-related aspects (e.g., store image, the assortment’s perceived variety, etc.)
- Delisting manufacturers’ brands and the effects on the distribution channel relationship.
- Consequences of delisting brands on consumer-related perceptions and decisions (e.g., visiting the store, buying store brands, word-of-mouth, etc.)
- The new ‘retailing landscape’, with special focus on fast-moving consumer goods retailing.
- Retailers’ assortment decisions and eventual repositioning to respond to other retailers’ successful assortment strategies in times of crisis.
- Brand manufacturers’ strategies in response to retailers’ assortment rationalization.
- Retailers’ delisting of national brands and its effect on their relations with manufacturers.
- Consumer preferences for national brands and private labels.
- Consequences of the economic crisis on retailers’ portfolios and consumers’ in-store preferences.
