Dear colleague,
One of the innovations introduced by the ACR organizing committee this year is a Mid-Career Mentorship Program (MCMP), organized by Nidhi Agrawal and Jonathan Levav. The program is aimed at faculty approaching tenure (up to two years) and those up to two years past tenure (we recognize that this is hardly “mid-career,” but bear with us as we figure out a better name!). The event will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to any attendee at the conference who meets this age requirement. In addition, we will attempt to ensure some broad representation of scholars from universities around the world and a variety of research areas.
The objective of the event is to help mid-career scholars navigate the tenure process, think about whether to move schools and how to do it, think about how to mentor PhD students, balance research with outside interests, and any other career related issues. We will hold several concurrent, rotating panels on each of these topics, after which participants will be paired up with senior faculty mentors who can answer any individual questions that the mid-careerists have. We are aiming to have one mentor for every two participants, and have already secured confirmations from many mentors who are experienced scholars, have been on promotion committees, frequently write letters, and have helped mould the careers of their students and colleagues.
The MCMP will be held from 2:00 to 4:30 PM on Thursday, October 3rd, in Terzo Piano, a private room at the Chicago Art Institute (a short walk from the conference hotel) and will include lunch. We are very grateful to Qualtrics for making this event possible.
We would be grateful if you could forward this note to colleagues of the appropriate age who might benefit from the program. The link below contains a Qualtrics survey with basic questions, and will serve as the application to the event. Of course, if you are the target vintage and would like to join us, please go ahead and click the link! The application process is very brief but the deadline for the application is very close, September 3, 2013. The results of the selection process will be communicated by September 10, 2013.
Thank you and looking forward to the conference!
Nidhi and Jonathan
