THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3

Doctoral Symposium ($70, registration required). As in previous years, the full-day Doctoral Symposium (7.30 am- 4.30 pm) will foster closer interaction amongst doctoral students and preeminent faculty fellows. Co-chaired by Derek Rucker and Jaideep Sengupta, it includes speed-dating sessions, breakout sessions, and large panels. The same evening, consortium faculty will get together with small groups of doctoral students over dinner at local restaurants. A preliminary program with session details will be available on the conference website in August.

Mid-Career Mentorship Program ($25, registration required). This inaugural 3-hour initiative, co-chaired by Nidhi Agrawal and Jonathan Levav, aims to connect pre-tenure and recently tenured faculty to senior mentors and discuss topics such as making an impact, mentoring doctoral students, moving institutions, and life before and after tenure. Registration will be limited to 40 participants selected by the co-chairs to ensure a varied and balanced group. Registration and selection criteria will be announced separately in August.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4

Malcom Gladwell’s keynote address (free, registration not required). This exceptional event will take place between 5.00 and 6.30 pm, and will be followed by the Poster session and Working Paper reception. We hope you will not miss it!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5

Workshops (free, registration required, limited seats). This new learning format aims to provide researchers with practical tools to hone research skills. There are several workshops currently scheduled between 5.00 and 6.15 pm:

  • Mediation, Contrasts, and LISREL (Dawn Iacobucci). How to really do mediation analyses, contrasts in ANOVA, and LISREL. Bring your laptop and questions. Dawn will email pre-conference instructions for downloads and be available for personal consultation.
  • Design Your Studies with Qualtrics (Bryce Winkelman). Learn what is new in the Qualtrics platform and how it can help you conduct more effective research. Also covers future product development roadmap and includes a Q&A session.
  • How to Make a Good Consumer Research Video (Russell Belk, Marylouise Caldwell, Paul Henry). Anyone who wants to make a consumer research video can do so with relatively little instruction or equipment. After whetting appetites with a few short examples, this workshop will provide practical suggestions for making a good video and conduct a short exercise on pre-production filmmaking. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of how to turn video footage into a film and how to make it an effective film. Both total novices and experienced filmmakers should be able to learn from it.
  • New Reviewer and Advanced Reviewer Training Sessions (Journal of Consumer Research). Current JCR Editors and Associate Editors will hold two separate training sessions for reviewers. The New Reviewer Training Session is open to all conference attendees who are new, potential, or beginning reviewers who review for or are interested in reviewing for JCR. The Advanced Reviewer Training Session is open to all conference attendees with substantial reviewing experience who would like to refine their skills in reviewing for JCR.

House of Blues Party ($35, registration required). Food, music, dancing, and free drinks at the iconic Chicago House of Blues (15-minute walk from the hotel). The event will last from 7.30 pm to midnight and feature live music by the Wharton band Brand Inequity (and guests), after which our in-house DJ will take control of the turntables. Check out more information about the venue and the band (including a live performance video) on the HOB Party page of the conference website ()
