As obesity rates continue to climb, the ever-present questions surrounding the health and wellness of our nation’s children are again brought to the fore-front of our minds. We at the B.E.N. Center are often seeking answers to child health and wellness issues through research in school lunchrooms across the country. Founded in Fall of 2010 by Dr. Brian Wansink & Dr. David Just, and funded by the USDA the B.E.N. Center began conducting behavioral economics research in school lunchrooms across the country with the goal of equipping school lunchrooms with evidence-based tools that improve child eating behaviors while maintaining the bottom line. The research has yielded best practices, methods and principles dubbed the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement which have been included in initiatives such as HUSSC, The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, The School Day Just Got Healthier, Chefs Move to Schools, Fuel Up to Play 60 etc. and have been implemented in over 15,000+ schools to date.
