Strategic IT Alignment
Introduction
Strategic IT Alignment: Twenty Five Years On, Special issue of Journal of Information Technology, Edited by Tim Coltman, Rajeev Sharma and Paul Tallon; Deadline 31 Jan 2014
We are pleased to announce a Special Issue of Journal of Information Technology on ‘Strategic IT Alignment: Twenty Five Years On’. Submissions are due January 31, 2014 (Call for Papers:
).
It has been 25 years since Henderson and Venkatraman published their classic paper on IT alignment. The role of IT in business and society has evolved significantly since then. It is perhaps time to refresh our concept of alignment as well as our theories of alignment. For instance, do we need new conceptualizations and new methodological approaches to capture IT alignment in contexts where:
- organizations seamlessly share IT infrastructure with their supply chain partners and undertake joint investments in IT infrastructure to co-create value;
- business units of multi-business organizations share IT infrastructure to create operational and strategic interdependencies;
- strategic shifts are common, for instance, through frequent mergers and alliances, as well as through divestments; and
- the emergence of cloud computing has meant that organizations do not own their IT infrastructure while efficient markets also exist for the supply of IT infrastructure.
We invite papers for this Special Issue that broadly advance the above research agenda, address past criticisms and refresh the theoretical base to account for emerging technological and organizational realities.
Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- The effects of strategic and operational interdependence on processes, antecedents and consequences of IT alignment;
- The effect of IT governance structures on IT alignment in contexts of strategic and operational interdependence;
- The role of top management team in creating IT alignment;
- Creating IT alignment through sequential investments in IT assets over time;
- Creating and maintaining IT alignment under mergers, alliances and divestment;
- Conceptual definitions and operational measures of the strategic IT alignment construct in the context of complex organizational forms;
- The effects of competitive intensity and environmental volatility on the processes, antecedents and consequences of IT alignment;
- New methodological approaches that capture the nature of IT investment decisions; and
- Sectoral studies (e.g. retail, health care, government etc.) and case studies of IT alignment with clear theoretical contributions.
