2012 Louis W. Stern Award

A committee that included Christian Homburg (University of Mannheim, Germany–Chair), Rajiv P. Dant (University of Oklahoma) and William D. Perreault, Jr. (The University of North Carolina), is pleased to announce that Jean L. Johnson (Washington State University), Ravipreet S. Sohi (University of Nebraska), and Rajdeep Grewal (Pennsylvania State University) have been selected as winners of the 2012 Louis W. Stern Award for their article, "The Role of Relational Knowledge Stores in Interfirm Partnering," published in the Journal of Marketing Vol. 68 (July 2004), 21–36.

The Louis W. Stern Award was established by Louis W. and Rhona L. Stern in 1999 through the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Foundation. The award recognizes an outstanding article published in a widely recognized and highly respected refereed journal that has made a significant contribution to the literature on marketing and channels of distribution. An article is eligible for consideration between three and eight calendar years after publication.

The committee was impressed by the article and its high degree of impact on the interorganizational literature for the following reasons:

  • The major contribution of the article is that it underlines the importance of the supplier’s relational knowledge acquisition and development for the success of interorganizational relationships. In this respect the article provides new theoretical insights for interorganizational marketing research by drawing on organizational theory, for example, the concept of absorptive capacity.
  • The article shows that the effects of relational knowledge stores on relationship success are highly nonlinear. Accounting for nonlinearities is both a major theoretical and empirical contribution of this article.
  • Finally, the findings have important managerial implications, notably in times of economic turbulence and crisis. The article shows how firms can rely on relational knowledge bases to deal with environmental uncertainty.

The Interorganizational SIG thanks all those who took the time to nominate articles and especially thanks the committee for all their work. Please join us in offering Jean, Ravi, and Raj hearty congratulations for their outstanding contribution to our field. As a reminder, the Stern Award will now be conferred at the Summer Educator’s conference in August.
