Dear colleagues,
Salamanca, Spain this year anyone? If you do really cool stuff at the forefront of marketing and AI this symposium may be of interest. As a member of the Program Committee I encourage marketing faculty to submit their most interesting work. Selected, expanded refereed papers from the symposium would be part of a Special Section of the JCR-indexed Expert Systems with Applications (ISI impact factor 1.924). See detailed announcement on the Call for papers below.
Best,

CALL FOR PAPERS
IS-MiS International Symposium on Management Intelligent System
July 11-13, 2012
Salamanca, Spain
MAIN SCOPE
This symposium is thought to be the first international forum to present and discuss original, rigorous and significant contributions on Artificial Intelligence-based (AI) solutions—with a strong, practical logic and preferably with empirical applications—developed to aid the management of the organizations at any of their multiple areas, activities, processes and decisional problems; i.e., what we propose to be named as Management intelligent Systems (MiS).
Artificial Intelligence discipline offers real opportunities for advancing the analytical methods and systems used by organizations to aid their inside and outside managerial processes and decisions. Indeed, well-conceived and designed intelligent systems are expected to outperform operations research- or statistical-based supporting tools in complex, qualitative and/or difficult-to-program managerial problems and decisional scenarios. However, these opportunities still need to be truly materialized by researchers and practitioners. Therefore, more interdisciplinary and applied contributions are necessary for this promising research stream to really take off.
Accepted papers will be included in the IS-MiS Proceedings, published in the Advances in Intelligent and Soft-Computing series of Springer. Furthermore, selected, expanded refereed papers from the symposium would be part of a Special Section of the JCR-indexed Expert Systems with Applications (ISI impact factor 1.924).
IMPORTANT DATES
- Paper submission deadline: February 20, 2012
- Notification of acceptance: March 1, 2012
- Camera-ready papers due: April 1, 2012
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
- Dr. Jay Liebowitz
- Dr. Vladimir Zwass
PUBLICATION
Accepted papers will be included in the IS-MiS Proceedings, published in the Advances in Intelligent and Soft-Computing series of Springer.

RATIONALE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
Basically, the AI core focuses on the development of valuable, automated solutions (mainly by means of intelligent systems) to problems that would require the intervention of intelligence if done by humans. In an organizational context, there are problems to be tackled that require this particular characteristic, which need human judgement and analysis to assess and solve these problems with guarantees of success. These decisional situations frequently relate to strategic issues in organizations, in general, and firms, in particular, where problems are far from being well-structured.
Developing and applying ad hoc intelligent systems, due to their particular strengths to process data and provide valuable information either with a data-driven or, especially, with a knowledge-driven approach, might be of interest to managers in their decision-making. However, in spite of their potentialities to contribute to companies’ strategic intelligence (i.e., business intelligence + competitive intelligence + knowledge management), this research theme has received scarce attention in journals that deal with business and management. A basic search in Scopus (article title, abstract and keywords) reveals that the number of papers published on both business and artificial intelligence/ intelligent systems is less than 150. Also, the overall number of published articles in more technical-oriented subjects (e.g., Computer Science, Decision Sciences, or Engineering, among others) treating issues on artificial intelligence/intelligent systems applied to marketing is below 300 (see Scopus).
In essence, the AI discipline offers real opportunities for advancing the analytical methods and systems used by organizations to aid their inside and outside managerial processes and decisions. Indeed, well-conceived and designed intelligent systems are expected to outperform operations research- or statistical based supporting tools in complex, qualitative and/or difficult to-program managerial problems and decisional scenarios.
However, these opportunities still need to be truly materialized by researchers and practitioners. Therefore, more interdisciplinary and applied contributions are necessary for this promising research stream to really take off.
The creation of this international symposium aims to promote, stimulate and publish high-quality contributions on applied-intelligent systems to support the management of any issue faced by the organizations, either within their boundaries or with their competitive environment.
On the one hand, some interesting areas of Management application might be, but are not limited to, the following:
- Competitive analysis.
- Current and potential markets’ analyses.
- E-business.
- Human resources.
- Knowledge management.
- Logistics and supply chain management.
- Production and operations.
- Research and development.
- Sales management.
- Strategic marketing and marketing-mix.
On the other hand, some intelligent systems conceived to face these problems may include, among others, the following:
- Ad hoc machine learning approaches.
- Artificial neural networks.
- Association rules.
- Bio-inspired optimization/learning algorithms.
- Clustering.
- Fuzzy logic and fuzzy systems.
- Genetic algorithms and evolutionary computation.
- Probabilistic graphical models.
- Probabilistic logic.
- Support vector machines.
- Web mining.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All papers must be formatted according to the Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing Series Springer template, with a maximum of 12 pages in length, including figures and references.
All proposed papers must be submitted in electronic form (PDF format) through the Web ().
REVIEW PROCESS
IS-MiS welcomes the submission of contributions with preference to the aim and topics above mentioned. The submitted contributions will be examined first by the organizers to decide its suitability with the symposium’s scope.
All contributions fitting the scope will undergo a thorough review process. They will be refereed by at least two experts in the field based on relevance, originality, significance, quality, and clarity. The reviewers will be mainly chosen from the Program Committee; one of them preferably specialized on the proposed Management application and the other on the used AI technique.
VENUE
The symposium will take place in Salamanca, Spain. With the Old City being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, and with its University being one of the four oldest European universities (founded in 1218), the city is the ideal setting to host this first IS-MiS.
