JR Special Issue Honoring the 2009 Nobel Laureate, Oliver E. Williamson
The third issue of Journal of Retailing, just released, honors the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics recipient Oliver E. Williamson in recognition of the Influence of Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) on Business Research.
The 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics awarded to Oliver E. Williamson was an historic event for business research. Indeed, Williamson’s research has inspired business scholars for more than four decades. This special issue of the Journal of Retailing begins with an Introduction by Bob Dahlstrom and Arne Nygaard, who co-edited this special issue, providing a synopsis of the scientific background supporting the Nobel Prize designation. Next, Williamson’s Nobel lecture is then reproduced. This is followed by two articles by Professor Williamson focused on the origins and the natural progression of TCE. The rest of the special issue offers articles by an eclectic group of scholars providing multi-disciplinary perspectives on TCE. These include Aline Gatignon, Hubert Gatignon, Torger Reve, and George John from marketing, Jean-François Hennart from international business area, and Jackson Nickerson and David J. Teece, from the field of strategic management. The issue concludes with a thoughtful epilogue by Bob Dahlstrom and Arne Nygaard which outlines opportunities for future avenues of TCE research.
