A Pre-Conference entitled “Ideas that Matter: A Dialog on Enhancing Theory Development in Marketing” will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Manjit Yadav (Texas A&M University) and Debbie MacInnis (University of Southern California) are serving as co-chairs. This half-day event is at the Boston Marriott Copley (the venue for the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Summer Educators’ Conference). Seating is limited to 100 and registration is now open. The ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Summer Educator’s conference kicks off at 6:00 pm on the same date.
Although the marketing discipline remains vibrant and progress continues to be made on multiple fronts, recent commentaries present a troubling picture—especially with respect to the issue of theory development in the discipline. With these commentaries as a backdrop, the pre-conference program has the following objectives:
- Facilitate a retrospective and prospective discussion of the 1984-1988 ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Task Force Report’s recommendations to spur theory development
- Understand the impact of conceptual, theory-building articles in knowledge development and delineate effective strategies for crafting such contributions
- Critically examine institutional factors (e.g., journals, doctoral programs, incentive systems) that influence theory development efforts
- Develop an agenda for enhancing theory and strengthening knowledge development in the marketing discipline in the future
Kent Monroe (Chair of the 1984-1988 ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Task Force on Knowledge Development in Marketing) will give the keynote presentation. Other confirmed speakers include: Ravi Achrol (George Washington University), Ruth Bolton (Marketing Science Institute), Peter Dickson (Florida International University), Shelby Hunt (Texas Tech University), Ajay Kohli (Georgia Tech), John Lynch (University of Colorado at Boulder), Richard Lutz (University of Florida), Leigh McAlister (University of Texas at Austin), David Stewart (University of California, Riverside), Rajan Varadarajan (Texas A&M University), William Wilkie (University of Notre Dame), and Gerald Zaltman (Harvard University).
Registration for the pre-conference is $30 for faculty members and $20 for doctoral students. As seating is limited, please register at your earliest convenience.
