Computer-Aided Qualitative Research Asia 2010
Examining the implications of software choices on qualitative research
3-4 February 2010, Kuala Lumpur
ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍøt the workshop:
The International workshop on Computer-Aided Qualitative Research Asia (CAQRA2010) will be held in the city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on the 3 & 4 February 2010. This workshop is organised by the Merlien Institute and endorsed by the Action Research journal (Sage). This highly interactive, cross-disciplinary workshop will bring together qualitative researchers, practitioners and students to discuss best practices on the use of software (e.g. Atlas.ti, NVivo, MaxQDA, Transana) in qualitative research.
Workshop format: To encourage maximum interaction and development of knowledge and ideas during the workshop, we have limited the number of participants attending this event. The format of the workshop will consist of a pre-workshop seminar, submitted (reviewed) presentations, poster presentations, invited speeches and panel discussion. As with past events, this workshop will provide excellent opportunities for participants to network with their peers.
Programme highlights: This workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for you to interact with international experts and discuss innovative ways of conducting qualitative data analysis using software. Content highlights include:
>Choosing the right software for qualitative research projects
>Selecting appropriate software tool for different types of studies and disciplines
>How to make use of software to enhance efficiency of doing qualitative analysis
>Applying computer-assisted qualitative data analysis in grounded theory analysis
>How to use qualitative software to perform participatory analysis?
>Using open-source CAQDAS tools: a qualitative research study in India
>Comparing major qualitative software tools: strength and shortcomings
>How to demonstrate and report the use of software tools in studies?
>Collaborating effectively in a web based team using design tools
>Analysing multimedia data: exploring new techniques of analysing photos and media files using software
>How to train students to use software tools effectively: ensuring confidence and individual user needs
Pre-workshop Seminar: Choosing the right software for your research study
The pre-workshop seminar (3 hrs) will be conducted by Dr Susanne Friese from the University of Hannover, Germany. She will be giving an overview of the latest developments in QDA software packages such as Atlas.ti, NVivo, MaxQDA, Transana and QDA Miner. She will also compare the software packages in terms of their methodological utility and practical usability. Analysis of multimedia data will also be discussed.
Interactive Panel Discussion:
The panel discussion will be facilitated by Prof Raewyn Basset, a QDA expert from Dalhousie University, Canada. She will be facilitating a panel discussion on how is software used with different methodologies. Topics of discussion include: what are the important things to consider when choosing a software for a particular research methodology? How can different methods of analysis be implemented in qualitative software? Can qualitative software be used in the field with participants to collect data and do participatory analysis?
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to discuss best practices with your peers in a friendly, fun and informal networking environment. This two-day workshop includes all documentation and lunch on both days. Accommodation and travel expenses are not included in the registration fee. Due to the nature of this small group workshop format, seats are limited. Please as early as possible.
