Green Management Matters:
A Carrotmob-Inspired Action Event

Guaranteed to be one of the most unique conference sessions you’ve ever attended! You don’t want to miss this opportunity to help a local business "go green" while you’re in Chicago!

Professional Development Workshop (PDW) Abstract:

Many small businesses believe they cannot afford to "go green" because it is too costly. This is where an innovative social network of environmentally-conscious consumers and stakeholders can help a small business "go green." This PDW symposium explains and puts into action Carrotmob’s social network model through a two-part project: an on-site PDW symposium and a follow-up off-site action event.

In the on-site PDW symposium, we explain the Carrotmob model’s emphasis on the carrot, not the stick, as a win-win proposition to encourage businesses to green their operations. The creative Carrotmob model allows businesses to earn extra revenues for "green projects" by coordinating a mass of supportive stakeholders to convene and shop at the business. The extra revenues generated by the mass shopping event are then applied to energy efficiency upgrades to help the participating business begin to"go green." Panelists who organized Chicago’s first-ever Carrotmob-inspired event will share their story and the participating business will be present to discuss the impact on his/her business.

The second part of this PDW involves participation in the off-site Carrotmob-inspired shopping event allowing Academy of Management members to become actively engaged in supporting a local small business in its efforts to "go green." Academy of Management members will become socially active, engaged stakeholders in the local community. Participants will put their actions behind the belief that Green Management Matters; this is an interactive opportunity to demonstrate that we support responsible stewardship of the natural environment.
