The Journal of Marketing Education’s Outstanding Article of the Year (2008) is “Uniting Active and Deep Learning to Teach Problem-Solving Skills: Strategic Tools and the Learning Spiral,” written by Professors Nina Diamond, Stephen K. Koernig, and Zafar Iqbal all of the Department of Marketing in the College of Commerce at DePaul University. The article was published in the August 2008 issue (Vol. 30, No. 2).

The winning article made a positive contribution to the marketing education literature by providing empirical evidence on how marketing educators can enhance their students’ problem solving skills. The authors describe and provide explicit examples of how others can employ a process they label the “learning spiral.” This learning spiral requires students to apply a variety of strategic marketing tools in different contexts, thus increasing their breadth and depth of understanding.
