New editor selected to head Journal of Marketing Research
Tülin Erdem, Leonard N. Stern Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Marketing in the Stern School of Business at New York University, has been named editor of Journal of Marketing Research. Erdem, whose three-year term starts July 1, 2009, becomes JMR’s first female editor. She replaces Joel Huber, who has been editor since April 2006. The editor search committee for her selection was composed of Richard Lutz (committee chair), Peter Dacin, Michael Houston, Jeff Inman, Scott MacKenzie, Leigh McAlister, and ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø publisher Jack Hollfelder.
“I am honored to be selected to serve as the next editor of JMR. I am committed to maintain and enhance JMR’s position as the preeminent broad academic journal in marketing that is open to behavioral, methodological, and modeling work,” Erdem said regarding the journal’s editorial focus. She further noted, “My overall vision for the journal is based on the fundamental premise that JMR should reflect the diversity of marketing as an academic field with articles demonstrating different substantive, theoretical, and methodological approaches. This diversity makes the marketing field itself so exciting, and JMR should vigorously promote that excitement. I am looking forward to enjoying the exposure to the diversity of research in marketing that JMR will bring.”
Before joining Stern in 2006, where she is also serving as the Director of Stern Center for Measurable Marketing, Erdem was the E.T. Grether Professor of Business Administration and Marketing in the Haas School of Business at University of California at Berkeley. Joining the Haas School of Business in 1993, Erdem also served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Marketing Group Chair, and the Ph.D. Director at the Haas School of Business and as the Chair of the campus-wide Committee on Research (COR). She was also Berkeley representative at the University of California system-wide Committee on Research.
“I am delighted that Tülin Erdem will be the next JMR editor. Tülin brings tremendous breadth and depth of experience to the position. Not only has she published in all the major journals in our field, but she has also served with distinction as both a reviewer and an associate editor,” said Richard Lutz, ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø’s vice president of publications. “One of the most important factors in her selection is her outstanding track record as a timely and constructive reviewer of manuscripts. I fully expect that under her leadership, JMR will lead the field in the publication of cutting-edge marketing research and also continue to earn respect and admiration as an author-friendly outlet. I look forward to working with her and the other ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø journal editors to make the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø journals the very best in the field of marketing.”
Erdem has a bachelor’s (Bogaziçi University) and master’s degree in Economics and a doctoral degree in Business Administration (University of Alberta). Her research interests include advertising, brand management and equity, consumer choice, decision making under uncertainty, econometric modeling, marketing mix effectiveness, and pricing. She has published several papers in leading journals and has received best paper awards and major research grants, including two major National Science Foundation grants. She has also served as an Area Editor at Marketing Science and an Associate Editor at Quantitative Marketing and Economics and Journal of Consumer Research. She has served on the editorial boards at Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Marketing Letters, and International Journal of Research in Marketing. Finally, Erdem served as president of INFORMS Society for Marketing Science (ISMS) and is currently serving as past president.
