Paper:
Family-owned businesses continue and will continue to play and form a significant part of the African economy. In some African countries like South Africa and Nigeria, much of the entrepreneurship activities and wealth lie with family-owned businesses. In recent years, the focus has been to promote entrepreneurship and small businesses in Africa and the old family-owned firms have been playing a crucial role in this process. They are also forming the fastest growing sector of the economy.
In this special volume, we welcome submissions, which investigate, explore, and explicate the roles of family-owned businesses in local economic growth. In particular, we are interested in theoretical and empirical papers/case studies that investigate the entrepreneurial contributions of FOBs, leadership and succession, their survival strategies and the impact they have on local economic growth. The volume will seek to explore interplay between family-owned businesses, innovation, leadership succession, management and local economic growth. Most importantly, the volume will seek to examine the economic opportunities and challenges posed by FOBs and will seek to provide solutions/suggestions for the best practices.
Papers should contain original and unpublished materials. Relevant topics include but not limited to:
- The case studies indicating the activities of FOBs
- Employment within FOB
- Leadership styles
- Innovation and entrepreneurial practices
- Survival and growth strategies of FOBs
- The contribution of FOBs to local economic growth
- Knowledge management/transfer within the sector.
- Conflicts and resolutions within FOBs.
- FOBs` role and participation in the global economy.
- Source of power within FOBs
- Technology and management practices.
- The impact(s) of Government Policies on FOBs.
- Capital accumulation/Source of Capital
- Social capital and networking
- Cultures
- FOB succession strategies
Deadline:
The deadline for submission of papers is Friday 23rd January, 2009. Authors will be notified of acceptance/rejection by Friday 27th February 2009.
The book will be published in the United Kingdom (2009)
Size:
Both empirical and theoretical papers are welcome. Paper should be between 4,000 – 8,000 words. For each contributors, we will need a short bio (400 words max)

Editors’ Bio
Dr Imani Silver Kyaruzi – is an Entrepreneurship and Economic Development analyst, who developed his thinking while working as a doctoral researcher and associate at the University of Birmingham, in the United Kingdom. He is visiting Professor of entrepreneurship at Kruejevac University, Serbia. He holds A Diploma in Business and Marketing from Solihull College, Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from The University of Wolverhampton, an MBA in Entrepreneurship from Birmingham City University and, a PhD in Entrepreneurship and Economics from the University of Birmingham, UK. He teaches courses in Management, Entrepreneurship and Economics. He is founder of African Micro journal of Entrepreneurship Research (www.amjer.org). His research interests include; Business incubation and Clustering and theories of local economic growth. His recent edited volumes include; “African Businesses and Economic Growth: Firms, Policy, Institutions and Practices”. Adonis and Abbey Publishers, London.
Rev. Anayo Dominic Nkamnebe – PhD, FNIMN, FISM, FSSM, is Associate Professor of Marketing, Coordinator of PhD Programme and immediate past Head Department of Marketing at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria. Rev. Dr. Nkamnebe is also a Board Member, International Society of Markets and Development USA and member of several professional associations and academies. He started his academic career after an intermission in the private sector, and has rendered invited service to several other universities (University of Nigeria, University of Lagos, Igbenedion University, University of Calabar, St. Paul’s University College, and Cross Rivers University of Technology, Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze etc); scholarly academies and professional associations (National Institute of Marketing Nigeria, International Academy of African Business and Development); government agencies (Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Export Group Anambra State); NGOs (CIDDOC) and private sector organizations (Hyon-Dae, NIFEX, Chikason Group, Cutix Plc etc). Dr. Nkamnebe works have appeared in Management Decisions, Critical Perspectives on International Business, Southwestern Business Administration Journal, International Journal of Applied Management, and Journal of Enterprising Communities: People and Places in the Global Economy. Previous work has been supported by funding from MacAuthur Foundation.
