The special issue on Research in Healthcare Operations and Quality Management aims to publish papers that provide greater insights into healthcare services, operations, quality management, decision making and performance improvement. This special issue seeks conceptual or empirical papers that pursue either theory-building or theory-testing. Papers based on empirical methodologies (e.g., case research, survey research, etc.) that fulfill the mission of the QMJ to encourage research that is relevant to practitioners are encouraged. This special issue also welcomes interdisciplinary papers that fulfill the same mission.

Healthcare is an essential and growing component of the economies in many countries. The increase in demand that is spurring the growth in healthcare is the result of evolving technology in medicine and the growing needs of aging populations. The challenge today is to deliver these services in a safe and cost effective manner while meeting organizational financial and quality standards. The intent of this call is to disseminate healthcare delivery research that is relevant to practitioners and that identifies ways to improve operations, financial management, and quality management associated with healthcare delivery in both inpatient and outpatient environments. Appropriate topics include but are not limited to:

  1. Improvements in the safety of healthcare delivery
  2. Maximizing revenues via improved compliance with reimbursement criteria
  3. Quality improvement in healthcare settings
  4. Measurement of healthcare quality
  5. Tools for effective managerial decision making in healthcare settings
  6. Organizational culture and quality improvement
  7. Use of technology to improve service delivery

Manuscripts must be submitted by September 30, 2009 and conform to QMJ requirements. It is important for authors to clearly state on the title page that the submission is for this special issue. Submissions should be made to the American Society for Quality (ASQ) through the normal channels as outlined in the QMJ’s guidelines. Author Guidelines are provided at the ASQ QMJ web site – . Manuscripts will undergo a double-blind review and the review process will adhere to all QMJ procedures. The guest editors in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief of QMJ will make all final decisions as to the suitability of manuscripts for the special issue.

Best wishes,
Xiaoni
