Managing Island Tourism: Cultural and Marketing Perspectives
International Journal of Culture, Tourism, and Hospitality Research
Abstracts Due: 30 November 2008, Full Paper Deadline: 30 January 2009
Globally, tourism is a $1 trillion (USD) industry that affects national, regional, and local economies. Many islands and island states rely upon successful tourism marketing to generate significant portions of their GNP. Increasingly, island destinations which have previously relied heavily upon sun, sea, and surf positioning are turning to cultural products for market differentiation. Governments, tourism industry, and communities are creating "islands of experience" in order to manage interactions and marketplace dynamics. In recognition of the importance of developing and successfully marketing cultural products which are both sensitive to local issues and mindful of international expectations and marketing realities, the International Journal of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research announces a call for a special issue on Managing Island Tourism with a specific focus on marketing and managing cultural products. The research should include both an introduction which describes the general theory or issue as well as primary research which focuses on current practices which serve as an exemplar for other jurisdictions or case development. These should promote best practice in the marketing of island tourism with cultural perspectives.
Topics of particular interest include:
- Reliance of islands and island states upon tourism marketing to generate GNP
- Re-positioning Island destinations as cultural product for market differentiation
- Creating "Islands of Experience"
- Local issues, international expectations and marketing realities
- Vulnerabilities, dependencies and strengths of islands and island states
- Partnerships: Government, tourism industry and /or community
- Management of destination interactions and marketplace dynamics
- Incentives and investment: Government, corporate or community
- Change management: Innovation versus conservatism
- Evaluating effectiveness and efficiency of program actions/processes
