Job Openings That Are No Longer Open
Introduction
Job candidates are urged to pay attention to whether a job posting is historical, or refers to the current recruiting cycle

In the last few weeks, I have received some email feedback from universities who are NOT hiring this year. They tell me that job candidates are sending them applications even though their department has not posted any job notice this year. They note that they did post a job notice in a previous year, and they suspect that candidates are using contact information from previous years’ job postings.
This leads me to note the following:
- ELMAR functions as a permanent archive of all posted communication, so departments have no way of removing old job postings from previous years.
- When browsing ELMAR job postings, potential candidates might wish to pay sufficient attention so as to be aware of whether the job opening still exists.
- Departmental search committee chairs might not wish to receive a large pile of resumes when in fact they have no open position this year. This might cause some of these chairfolk to remember a confused job seeker’s name with something less than a halo effect, let’s say.
- I do hope that all of those receiving applications for positions that have not existed for a year or more can look on the bright side: Your school is desirable!
