Introduction

Fordham University is looking to adopt software for online surveys to reside on our server or online surveying services to be hosted by a commercial provider. We have been disappointed by the two services we have used to date. Those of us in the decision making unit have identified a list of criteria by which to judge the programs available, and we’ve read the ELMAR posts from last year about pros/cons of specific system. We’d appreciate any additional or more current help the academic marketing community can provide, such as search criteria we may not have thought of. Here’s our list of criteria:

Features:

  • Has a method for logic and range checks
  • Has a method for skip and fill
  • Allows for matrix questions (both creation and ability to manage more than one variable in a row)
  • Exports to SPSS, SAS, Excel, or other convenient format

Functionality:

  • Ease of modifying a survey after initial creation (e.g., inserting items between pre-existing questions)
  • Ease of changing skip and fill instructions
  • Availability of short URL for click-through
  • Reliable user support

Formatting:

  • WYSIWYG formatting without having to update and preview
  • Degree of control over appearance of text (font size, color, etc.)
  • Control over formatting matrix questions
  • Cost and Licensing (e.g., price, conditions of license)

I’ll be happy to report back to ELMAR with a summary of responses. Thanks,

Marcia
