Position

Assistant/Associate/Full Professor: tenure track, nine month salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Opportunity for summer teaching and/or research funding.

Qualifications

Ph.D. required in retailing, consumer behavior, marketing, merchandising or closely related field. Undergraduate and graduate teaching competence/aptitude essential. Proven success in research and ability to obtain research funding. Experience directing graduate research desirable.

Salary

Commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities Assume the following significant responsibilities for teaching and research in Retail and Consumer Sciences:

  • Direct graduate student research
  • Enhance scholarship through excellent teaching, publishing in refereed journals and other learned endeavors
  • Seek funding opportunities
  • Maintain active relationships with industry professionals
  • Participate in planning and coordinating the undergraduate and graduate programs
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Advise both undergraduate and graduate students
  • Participate in curriculum evaluation, revision, and development
  • Participate in university service activities and professional societies

Academic Environment

The Retail and Consumer Sciences major is housed in the Department of Retail, Hospitality, and Tourism Management in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at The University of Tennessee, a Land-Grant and Carnegie Level I Research Institution. The Retail and Consumer Sciences program has approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 20 graduate students.

The College offers a strong base for programs in Retail and Consumer Sciences, with emphasis on innovation, quality, and interdisciplinarity. Undergraduate and graduate programs in Retail and Consumer Sciences are well established and have a celebrated history. Recent revisions and additions at both undergraduate and graduate levels that emphasize service management have sharpened program focus and have further positioned the programs at the leading edge. Courses offered in the department are supported by faculty and coursework outside the College including marketing, economics, management, social sciences and statistics. Interdisciplinary research and service projects are supported by the Institute for Service Excellence and the UT Tourism Institute.

Living Environment

The campus is located in Knoxville in the picturesque Tennessee Valley, near the Great Smoky Mountains and within a short drive of five major Tennessee Valley Authority lakes, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and numerous scenic and historic sites. The Knoxville-Oak Ridge Smoky Mountain Region is consistently ranked among the most cost-effective places to live in the U.S. The Knoxville area is home to several corporate and regional offices of major retail firms and houses numerous national and international retailers.
