The purpose of the John J. Vanier Distinguished Chair for Geographical Information Systems is to propel Kansas State University’s College of Business Administration into a leadership position in terms of GIS education and research in business. The $5 million endowed chair is part of the State of Kansas Faculty of Distinction Program.
Starting Date: August 2008
Job Description: The John J. Vanier Distinguished Chair holder will serve as a regular member of the faculty in the College of Business Administration and will serve as a focal point for research and scholarly programs in the field of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Duties of the John J. Vanier Distinguished Chair in Business Administration for Geographical Information Systems will include:
- Interfacing with other units on campus to build a business GIS program.
- Implementing and enhancing the existing CBA GIS strategic plan.
- Developing and teaching business GIS courses.
- Developing and building relationships with companies interested in GIS.
- Conducting and promoting research in GIS with business applications.
- Being the champion for GIS activities within the CBA.
The University and College of Business Administration: Kansas State University is a state-supported institution of more than 23,000 students. The University is recognized for the quality of its academic programs and for consistently producing recipients of top national academic scholarships. The 668-acre main campus is located in beautiful Manhattan, Kansas (population approximately 45,000) a community nestled in the Flint Hills of Northeast Kansas. The College of Business Administration is one of 10 colleges on the main campus. The college, with 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students and 55 full-time faculty, consists of four academic departments: Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing. The College is accredited by AACSB at the bachelors and masters level in both business administration and accounting. Faculty in the College of Business regularly publish in the top tier business journals and serve on many editorial review boards. The College has been in a growth mode over the past few years resulting in the creation of 12 new endowed chair positions.
GIS Activities at KSU: In addition to this position, KSU has invested nearly $1 million in new GIS faculty/staff hires and enhancements to its GIS IT infrastructure. The university operates under a full site license with ESRI for GIS software and the College of Business has acquired a 25 seat laboratory license for the ESRI Business Analyst software. Several award-winning GIS research and teaching labs are operated by multiple departments on campus. Leaders in the central administration at KSU are very supportive of GIS education and are interested in seeing all students exposed to GIS concepts during their educational programs to strengthen their spatial literacy. A cooperative and collaborative mindset exists among faculty with GIS expertise at KSU, resulting in several multidisciplinary research grants, formation of a university-wide GIS Steering Committee, and plans to develop a state-of-the-art GIScience research and outreach laboratory called the GIS Commons. CBA faculty are well trained, sophisticated users of technology tools for analysis of business problems and have begun to initiate training in GIS software. The CBA has faculty representation on the university GIS steering committee.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a doctoral degree in a field related to business with a proven record of excellence in research and teaching consistent with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor at KSU. Applicants from a wide range of academic disciplines are encouraged to apply. In addition, the position requires strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to improving GIS education and practice. Experience in working in a diverse and multicultural environment is desirable.
In the letter of application, candidates should address their history of scholarly interests as they relate to GIS in Business contexts, special reasons for justifying their selection to the chair, and a description of any service impacting the business and academic communities in the area of GIS. Documented evidence of strong scholarly and administrative skills is particularly desirable.
