Replication and Over Replication

Introduction

Michael Basil suggests that popular theories may in fact be over replicated

I have enjoyed the discussion of replications. I would suggest, however, that replications are not, and should not be limited to exact replications of the original study. Instead replications with extensions, replications in other contexts, and critical tests that may pit the original study against competing theories are all important fodder for evaluating our findings. I think when you think of these alternative methods, almost every major theory results in some level of replication; in fact, I would argue that our most popular theories are probably OVER replicated, perhaps even with the result of limiting our development of new ideas and theories.
