“Making the Transition”
A Workshop for New Marketing Faculty

Friday, August 3rd
Hilton Washington Hotel – Washington, D.C.

The ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø is pleased to offer its third annual workshop for first- and second-year Marketing faculty, to be held Friday, August 3, 2007, 8am – 5pm, at the Hilton Washington Hotel, Washington, D.C., immediately preceding the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Summer Educators’ Conference at the same location. The workshop is being held under the auspices of the ÂÜÀòÉç¹ÙÍø Academic Council and will be chaired by Richard J. Lutz (University of Florida) and Michael J. Houston (University of Minnesota).

The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum for guidance and dialogue among several leading academics and colleagues who are just launching their careers. Many new faculty members experience “growing pains” in making the transition from being a doctoral student to being a successful tenure-track faculty member, with pressures of research, teaching, and service, as well as the need to balance personal and professional priorities. The workshop is designed to address these areas of concern, drawing on the successful career experiences of both senior and early career faculty. Key goals of the workshop include guidance to new faculty members who, in some cases, may be struggling with the lack of structure common to faculty positions. The workshop also is intended to help young faculty members develop a vision for their future, based on their current situation and career goals. Topics to be addressed include research and publication, teaching excellence, balancing research and teaching demands, finding a mentor, networking, and career management.

In addition to the Co-Chairs, this year’s roster of presenters includes Dhruv Grewal, Babson College, Kristy Reynolds, University of Alabama, and Rajesh Chandy, University of Minnesota. The morning will be devoted to teaching excellence, while the afternoon will focus on launching a successful research program.

Last year’s workshop in St. Petersburg Beach, Florida was attended by about 20 new faculty and was considered by the attendees to be a very valuable experience, with 75% giving it a “top box” rating on the “recommend to a colleague” question. One attendee commented, “These sessions are really needed – they help you realize others are struggling with the same problems as you,” and another said, “Overall – loved the day! Nice size of group to allow for visiting, great to have presenters at lunch to visit!

In order to facilitate interaction and free interchange of ideas, participation will be limited to 40 first- and second-year faculty members. A nominal registration fee of $50.00 will hold your place at this important event. We hope to see you in D.C.!
