PhD Workshop in Theory-Rich Marketing Modeling
Fuqua School of Business
Duke University
15-17 August 2007
Duke University is pleased to sponsor a PhD workshop in theory-rich modeling. The purpose of this workshop is to help graduate students in marketing better understand the environment being modeled; develop rich analytic models that capture this environment; and disseminate their findings to a more general audience. This workshop will address several substantive and methodological topics as well as cover ways to navigate the review process. The schedule will include several tutorial sessions in which a faculty member will cover analytic models in detail. Furthermore, this workshop will provide opportunities for students to discuss their ideas and research with the organizers, other faculty, and other participants.
Schedule
The workshop will be held over a three-day period beginning at 1 pm on 15th August 2007 and concluding on 17th August 2007 at noon. There will be two tutorials on day one, three tutorials on day two, and one tutorial on day three. Although details of these sessions have not been finalized, at a minimum, we expect the following faculty will be presenting: Teck Ho, Joel Huber, Jagmohan Raju, Peter Rossi, Steve Shugan, Kannan Srinivasan, and Miguel Villas-Boas. In addition, we expect to have one or more presentations from practitioners.
During the course of the workshop, teams of students will work on research projects. On the final day, each team will present its research ideas to a panel of faculty members.
Participants
The workshop is intended for Marketing PhD students who by July 2007 will have completed at least two years of their graduate program and/or taken the core curriculum in economics that includes micro economics, game theory and industrial organization. Attendance at the workshop is competitive and Duke University will fund up to 25 students’ expenses for room and board at our executive education facility at the R. David Thomas Center. There is no registration fee for the workshop. However, students will need to cover their own travel related expenses.
We also encourage faculty members interested in theory-rich modeling to attend this workshop. We envision a series of highly interactive sessions and additional faculty members will enhance the quality of the experience. To the extent possible, we will help faculty cover local expenses, although this will depend on our final budget.
Faculty
The advisory panel for the workshop includes:
Anne Coughlan, Jim Hess, Ganesh Iyer, Rajiv Lal, Chakravarthi Narasimhan, Jagmohan Raju, Ram Rao, Brian Ratchford, Subrata Sen, Steven Shugan, Duncan Simester, Kannan Srinivasan, J. Miguel Villas-Boas, and John Zhang. A number of these people have indicated that they will attend the workshop.
PhD Student Application Procedure
To apply, send a curriculum vita, a statement (maximum two pages) describing your current research, your relevant coursework and grades and your interest in analytic modeling along with one letter of recommendation from your faculty advisor. Letters of recommendation should be as informative as possible about your standing in the program, general ability, research potential, and special interest in analytic models. All applications must include an e-mail and mailing address. All the information should be submitted by May 15, 2007 to TRMworkshop@duke.edu. We will notify applicants by June 15, 2007.
