A New Era for Liberal Arts Education in Hong Kong

Lingnan University is a distinctive liberal arts institution in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It offers honours bachelor’s degrees and postgraduate programmes up to the doctoral level. The University seeks to provide its students with an education in the liberal arts tradition from both East and West. A wide range of programmes are offered in the disciplines of arts, business and social sciences. Applications are now invited for the following posts, which will be tenable from mid-August 2007:

Department of Marketing and International Business

The Department has a team of staff members with international background, who are congenial, collaborative and dedicated to excellence in teaching and research.  It offers a wide spectrum of courses for the marketing stream of the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Programme, which is designed to equip the students with a foundation of business operations, and a full understanding of contemporary concepts and practices in marketing and international business.  Further information on the Department and its programmes and activities can be found on the following website: http://ww.LN.edu.hk/mkt.

The appointee is expected to teach courses in Marketing and International Business and conduct research for publication in quality refereed journals.  Areas of teaching specialization include Marketing Research, Sales Management, Retailing and Distribution Management, International Marketing Management, Services Marketing, and Marketing Strategies.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline, evidence of excellence in teaching, and potential for or track record of quality research and publications. Candidates with strong research background/potential are especially encouraged to apply.

(2)    Lingnan Foundation Teaching Scholar    (Post Ref.: 07/08/C)

In order to promote cultural exchanges between the United States and Hong Kong, and to provide an Asian educational experience for a scholar in the early stages of his/her career, the Lingnan Foundation (New York) and Lingnan University established the Lingnan Foundation Teaching Scholar (LiFTS) position. The Foundation and the University now invite applications for the LiFTS position for the academic year 2007-2008 to be appointed in one of the following areas: (a) Economics, (b) English, or (c) Marketing and International Business.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline. For specific areas of teaching responsibility, interested candidates are encouraged to visit the university website () before applying to determine if their fields match the teaching areas in the relevant departments. Please note that this post is designed to provide an educational experience for a scholar in the early stages of his/her career.

Conditions of Appointment

The monthly salary ranges for the posts are as follows: Assistant Professor – around HK$40,600 to HK$64,000; Lingnan Foundation Teaching Scholar – around HK$40,600 to HK$43,500 (US$1=around HK$7.8). Commencing salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits, where applicable, include annual leave, medical benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, housing benefits and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.

For post (1), appointment will initially be made on a fixed-term contract of three years, which is renewable subject to mutual agreement. Appointments may also be made on a visiting basis at all ranks on a short-term contract. For post (2), the visiting post will be for nine months only.

Responsibilities: Duties will include teaching introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Marketing Management,  Consumer Behavior, Marketing for Non-Profit,  International Marketing and related areas; developing courses and programs in these curricula; advising undergraduate and graduate students; assisting with AACSB accreditation, participating in departmental/college/ university-wide committees; demonstrated potential for effective teaching and engaging in scholarly and professional activities (such as seeking external funding to support research interests and/or outreach programs). Teaching assignments may involve travel to regional sites and/or distance learning formats.

Qualifications:  An earned Ph.D./DBA in Marketing (ABD in advanced stage of doctoral dissertation with anticipated degree completion date no later than December, 2009 may  be considered) from an AACSB accredited university and teaching experience at the college/university level is required.  Candidate must have demonstrated potential for very effective teaching and scholarly activity leading to publication.  Strong written, electronic, and verbal communication skills, some expertise in web-based course and program delivery, and a demonstrated proficiency in the English language are required.  The successful candidate will have a strong desire to teach; actively recruit students; develop web-based courses; and develop innovative curricular approaches that are student-centered.
