Marla Stafford, New Editor of Journal of Advertising for 2007 though 2010
As was announced at the American Academy of Advertising conference last Spring, this month marks the start for the new editor of Journal of Advertising, Marla Stafford, professor and chair of the University of Memphis Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management.
The Journal of Advertising has long been recognized as the premier journal devoted to the development of advertising theory and its relationship to practice. To quote from the editor, "I believe it is important for the editor to be open to all types of manuscripts as long as they meet the standards of quality for the Journal and ultimately, contribute to the generation of advertising knowledge." To streamline the review process, the new editor is converting to a completely electronic system — All manuscripts, reviews and revisions should be emailed to joa@memphis.edu. A special topic issue for this year has been announced on "Creativity in Advertising" and another special topic issue’s will soon be forthcoming for 2008 to be on "Advertising Regulation and Self-Regulation."
Since receiving her doctorate from the University of Georgia, Dr. Stafford has produced an impressive research record of advertising research published in a variety of leading business and communications journals such as Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Journal of Business Research, and (of course) Journal of Advertising which recognized one article in 2002 as the best of the year. As the AAA committee reviewed her application as editor, it was noted that rarely has a new editor come into the job with such an extensive record of prior experiences for supervising refereed manuscripts. Dr. Stafford’s important record as editor includes having edited past special topics issues of JA and other journals, serving on the editorial boards of several leading journals, and working as editor and creator of the refereed "Bits Briefs and Applications" section of Journal of Consumer Affairs (2001-2005).
