Seminar Overview
The seminar is the fourth in the “Rethinking Arts Marketing” Seminar Series, which is funded by the United Kingdom Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The objective of the series is to help re-think ‘arts marketing’ by bringing together scholars and practitioners working in the area. The fourth seminar contributes to this objective by exploring creative and innovative methodological perspectives and methods which might be mobilised in theory building within arts marketing and consumption.

Speaker: Dr Alan Bradshaw (University of Exeter)
Framing Commercialised Artistic Practice
Dr Alan Bradshaw is a Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Exeter. His research interests include critical theory and considering the intersections between aesthetics and the market, particularly in the context of music. His work has been published in such journals as Consumption, Markets & Culture, Journal Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Macromarketing and Marketing Theory.
Speaker: Prof Christina Goulding (University of Wolverhampton)
Reflections on First Encounters with Grounded Theory: Some Things the Text Books Don’t Tell You.
Christina Goulding is Professor of Consumer Research at the Business School, University of Wolverhampton. Her research interests lie in cultural consumption, subcultural consumption and consumption and identity. She has published her work in a number of international journals including Psychology and Marketing, European Journal of Marketing, Consumption Markets and Culture and Journal of Marketing Management. She is the author of a book entitled ‘Grounded Theory: Practical Applications for Managers and Market Researchers’ and is co-editor of the forthcoming book ‘Critical Marketing’.
Speaker: Dr Dirk vom Lehn (Kings College London)
Video-based Studies of Cultural Consumption: Examining Visitors Responses to Exhibits
Dr Dirk vom Lehn is Research Fellow at Work, Interaction and Technology, an interdisciplinary research group at King’s College London. He currently is employed on an AHRC funded projected entitled: "Enhancing Interpretation: new techniques and technologies for fine and decorative art museums".
Speaker: Anthony Patterson (University of Liverpool)
How to Get Ahead in Arts Marketing: An Exploration of the Artistic Research Imperative
Anthony Patterson is a lecturer in marketing at the University of Liverpool. His research interests can be thematically organised into the following categories: the marketing of books (e.g. Fight Club, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Harry Potter), contemporary cultures of communication (e.g. text messaging), innovative research techniques (e.g. qualitative diary research), love in the marketplace (e.g. speeddating) and the study of consumerscapes (e.g. Irish pubs). His articles have been published in a wide variety of prominent marketing journals.
